The Year 1809:
Passing the Torch

Dmitri Pogorelov, Violin

Special appearance by
The Bel Canto Ringers

With the death of the great Franz Joseph Haydn in 1809, the classical era of music completed its transformation into the new age of Romanticism.  Enter the phenomenally gifted Felix Mendelssohn, whose heavenly genius would endow the musical world with his own brand of rare and exquisite beauty. The elder master will be represented by his magnificent Symphony No. 99, while the brilliant prodigy's immortal violin concerto will showcase another superb young artist, violinist Dmitri Pogorelov. And lest we ignore music that was actually being written in 1809, we present a delightfully sunny overture by the young Rossini.

GUEST ARTIST
Hailed as the "future violin superstar" by the Flint Journal, Dmitri Pogorelov started playing the violin at the age of 5, gave his first solo recital three years later, and first soloed with an orchestra at the age of 9.  After moving to the United States seven years ago, Dmitri studied with world-renowned violinists Ilya Kaler, Elmar Oliveira and Sergiu Schwartz.

Dmitri has
appeared in solo recitals, and as soloist with orchestras in the United States, Germany, Italy, France, Japan, and Russia, where he performed in the most prestigious concert halls of Moscow and St. Petersburg. As part of Dmitri’s interest in modern music, he recorded chamber music works by Eric Ewazen, Gunther Schuller and Yehudi Wyner for Albany Records.

Dmitri Pogorelov plays a 1714 Vincenzo Ruggieri violin, on loan to him courtesy of long time mentor and friend Archimandrite Zinovy of Kursk.

There will be a free pre-concert lecture given by our popular lecturer, Jim Kendros, starting at 2:30 pm.
