Vienna, the music capital of the Old World,
had its own quartet of greats - Hayden, Mozart, Beethoven and Johann
Nepomuk Hummel, who studied with Mozart, succeeded Haydn at the
Esterhazy Court and rivaled Beethoven in popularity as both composer and
virtuoso pianist! One of the glories of the romantic piano repertoire,
Hummel's Piano Concerto in B Minor
will share the program with the youthful, exuberant
Symphony No. 2 of
his great teacher.
Pianist Michael Chertock,
who has dazzled audiences from Ravinia to London, returns to the NSO
stage for the Chicago-area premiere of the Hummel piano concerto.
