        The Beautiful Era

Thomas Pandolfi,
Piano

Program Selections
Moszkowski

Piano Concerto in E Major,
op. 59

Elgar

Variations on an Original Theme, op. 36 ("Enigma")

The charm and opulence of the late 19th century "Belle Epoque" was transformed by Elgar into his stunning Enigma Variations, which established him as a major force in British music.  Filled with witty references to his friends and associates, the work nonetheless transcends its modest origins and yields a masterpiece of both immense power and wistful, elegant beauty.

The only enigma surrounding the Piano Concerto by Polish composer Moritz Moszkowski is the fact that it is played so rarely!
A delightful work and a longtime favorite with CSO audiences, the concerto practically overflows with lovely melodies and brilliant flourishes for the soloist.

Speaking of which, Thomas Pandolfi, who captivated our audience in 2009 performing Strauss' Panathenaenzug for the piano left- hand, returns to demonstrate his keyboard prowess using both hands!

There will be a free pre-concert lecture given by our popular lecturer, Jim Kendros, starting at 2:30 pm.
