Program Selections |
Three works which display the exotic influence of Turkish music on Viennese composers of the late 18th century. Mozart took full advantage of the Turkish craze of the day; his comic opera The Abduction from Seraglio contains some of his sunniest music, while his earlier Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, K. 219 acquired its nickname from the famous use of the Turkish idiom in its finale. Haydn's magnificent Symphony 100 in G Major, written to fulfill his superstar engagement in London in 1794, features among its limitless joys, a trio of Turkish military instruments in the famous variations of the second movement. The brilliant young local violinist Alexandra Switala makes her NSO debut. |
