Northbrook Symphony to present Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 "The Titan" on January 11

Northbrook, IL — The Northbrook Symphony, the North Shore’s fully professional orchestra, invites music lovers to "The Titan," an unforgettable afternoon of music on Sunday, January 11, 2026 at 4:00pm at the Sheely Center for the Performing Arts.

Music Director Mina Zikri conducts nearly 100 players in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, nicknamed "The Titan." Mahler's first symphony is a sweeping work of profound emotional range and orchestral color, featuring an evocative primordial opening, a delightful "Ländler" country dance waltz, the mournful third movement quoting "Frère Jacques," and a thrilling finale with horn players rising to their feet. The Titan traverses nature, nostalgia, and triumph, making this performance a highlight of the season.

The concert opens with a short and delightful curtain raiser, “A Taste of Vienna,” created and performed by host, singer and arranger Robbie Ellis. This four-item set evokes the spirit of the Austrian capital with a mix of wit and tradition. Robbie first presents two Tom Lehrer waltz songs, “The Wiener Schnitzel Waltz" and “Alma," before turning to “Laue Sommernacht,” an exquisitely lyrical song composed by Alma Mahler, the subject of Tom Lehrer's "Alma". Robbie finishes with his take on Johann Strauss I's "Radetzky March," inviting the audience to clap along.

WFMT host and producer Marilyn Rea Beyer presents a complimentary pre-concert talk at 3:00pm. The concert will run approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission. Tickets are available by calling (847) 272-0755 and by visiting www.northbrooksymphony.org .
